It breaks down training and nutrition very well. It explains the importance of each training method or training type, as well as basic nutritional explanations. The best part is, it breaks down "dumb questions" anyone new to triathlons may have about training, nutrition and the race itself. He breaks down how the transition areas work, what you do, how best to prepare for the race the day before and on race day.His weight training section has pictures in it that show and explain well how to do the exercise properly. However, in this day and age, if you're in doubt, look it up on YouTube. There are great instructional videos, that break the movement down so that you know the do's and dont's.The training plans themselves are doable with a busy schedule (trust me, I would know!). They are easy to follow, make sense and enable you to perform well on race day. I like that he has included different levels of training (beginner, intermediate and advanced) though I doubt that any advanced people would read this book. If you read this book prior to starting a triathlon, fall in love with it, then the intermediate and advanced plans are great, but at that stage you should be able to know what works for you, and what doesn't so that you can create a well balanced training schedule that allows you to perform at your best. At that level of training, you'd be looking at pro advice and different training techniques to optimize your training. One complaint I have is that yoga is not incorporated into the schedule. Yoga works wonders for any athlete, especially a triathlete with a rigorous schedule like the ones suggested in the book for the Half Ironman and Ironman races. Yoga is extremely beneficial in the recovery process, and helps build and stretch different muscle groups that prevent injury, which is what Tom Holland tries to achieve with his weigh training program (and it works, but adding yoga would be even better). That is such a small minor detail, that you can just include yourself that I wasn't going to lower the rating just for that reason. Simply doing 15-20 minutes of yoga in the morning or before going to bed is sufficient at least 3 times a week. There are great yoga tutorials on YouTube, you just have to find an instructor that suits you best. I like the yoga tutorial called "Beach Yoga with Karena" by Tone It Up. It's great for beginners, it's short, so I was always able to squeeze it in in the mornings, or as a warm up before my workouts. It's also great as a cool down stretch!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Simple Triathlon Plans and great informationBy B. WuesteToo many triathlon books are incredibly technical with heart rate zones and advanced power metrics. These technical books have training plans that read like novels with 8 various sub workouts on a given day at all sorts of exact times and paces that are tough to get right.I spent some time at a bookstore flipping through probably 20 different triathlon books and this was the one that stuck out to me as including some training plans that made sense to me and that I could actually follow. The plans are broken out into 3 levels from beginner to advanced so there is room to grow within a triathlon distance. There are also plans ranging from sprint triathlon to ironman so there is room to grow as you start to tackle longer races. There is some good background information on each of the three disciplines as well as some good basic exercises and stretches you can do, but the real value is in the training plans.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Great BookBy Scott HarrisonI have used Tom's various books for many years. I recently completed my 11th full distance tri. I can credit Tom's 12 Week book with 6 top ten AG finishes. The various workout schedules make sure you are not doing too much or too little as you approach race day. I am slowly moving my way up the podium and I was 3rd in AG earlier this month. This is due to Tom's insightful writing. Tom's book will help any athlete, whether first timer or seasoned participant, achieve their goals.See all 38 customer reviews...
