I was not compensated or asked for a review. In Awaken, which picks up only a short time after Underworld, Pierce and John are back down under...and they're not alone. I will elaborate under the cut for the sake of anyone who has not read the first two novels. To you people, I say, "GO READ THEM NOW." Ahem.Right, Pierce + John + band of Merry Men + Alex + Kayla + Underworld = madness. One thing that I love so much about Meg is that she has no problem adding new people to a series, even in the final book. I think it's great. Abandon introduced all the people on Isla Huesos, while Underworld introduced John's crew (and kind of ignored the people introduced in Abandon, tbh), and you think that's gonna be it. But no, suddenly there are new people who get plenty of page time. Meg is a master at pulling in new characters up to the eleventh hour and using them to the greatest effect while simultaneously bringing back characters from the first book that weren't as prominent in the second. Brilliant. Also, Meg has no problem causing plenty of drama. Like, oh, the love interest goes away (I won't say where, but ohhh, I thought I was going to die reading that part). And suddenly Pierce is making out with the bad boy. And there's a secondary character love triangle. Oh, yes, and a massive hurricane in the real world and a weird supernatural storm raging in the Underworld. Perfect. Let it be said that Meg Cabot juggles drama with more ease and with greater effect than the casts of every rendition of Real Housewives, The Hills, Jersey Shore, and Real World combined. Guys, this shtuff be crazy.By far, Meg's greatest strength is writing relatable heroines and matching them with insanely and ridiculously good looking love interests and giving them heart. Some of the language used by other characters was a bit much, but basically the gist is that Pierce and John balance each other out. They can both be pretty volatile and as un-levelheaded as one could possibly be, especially when it comes to the other or at least, their safety, but somehow they manage to calm each other. Their relationship is flawed and imperfect, but they truly love each other, which is clear from the sacrifice and hard work they put in to keep it going. There's one lovely scene in Awaken where John and Pierce sit down and basically act out Relationship Compromise 101. The young adult genre is a lot about the getting together, but not always about the staying together. Often, the love interests don't even kiss until the last chapter. The entire Abandon trilogy walks the reader through the history of John and Pierce's relationship and proves that they want to stay together, even when faced with, well, everything going to hell. Literally. It's messy andfrustrating, but it's also tender and loving. I am in love with John and Pierce together, which is rare for me because usually I'm too busy lusting after just the guy to entirely care about the characters' actual relationship. Hee hee.I feel very at peace with the conclusion of the series; I really feel like it was the right way to go. Did I know what was going to happen Nope. Another good thing about Meg is that while I feel so familiar with her writing, she still has a lovely capability to surprise me. It keeps her stories fresh. I'm very impressed with the research and time Meg put into the series. This trilogy is beautifully written and features some fantastic new characters in a really cool mythologically-inspired world. Meg has written so many wonderful books and series that sometimes I wonder if she'll be able to keep it up with the new stuff. The answer is unequivocally, yes.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Will NOT be finishing this Trilogy...By NhyaI am highly disappointed in this second installment. Compared to the 1st book, which I thought was quite good, it felt as though I was not even reading about the same characters that I met in book 1. The "Teaser" you read on the back of this book, is just that a teaser. It's like you've been shown previews that you are not going to see in the actual movie.I will tell you what I dislike about this book.1. EVERYONE IN THIS BOOK WERE ACTING LIKE COMPLETE IDIOTS. (with the exception of John) Which even then, I did not like his eager drive to willingly deceive Pierce through out this book. And we're talking about deception to the highest power here. Does one deceive so easily the one he claims to love Her well being and what was in her best interests were always what was most important for Pierce right According to John. Yet he had no problem letting go of this noble stance when it came to getting what he wanted. Consequences be damned. Yet the ones who were stuck in the underworld with him, this fact seemed to tear at his (John's) soul. "It's wrong" he said. "I would undo it if I could" he said. Yet he will condemn the one he actually loves to this place To this life and purposely lie and deceive to achieve this. So by the time she figures out what's really going on it will be too late. Therefore taking away from her the right to have made a real choice in the matter. Not one that's just based on the fact that she loves him... Yeah a complete jacked up contradiction. And it doesn't stir the Kool-aid for me when it comes to the tone of this book and trying to win me over to John.2. Why are you taking your own sweet time getting away when you KNOW that the Furies are there, where you are in that moment to kill you Pierce is like the dumbest chick ever! Yet another thing that didn't flow with this story. And this happens for 75% of the book.3. Your missing for 2 days. Your picture is in the paper. Your mother is beside herself as well as your father. The whole town knows you've been "abducted" yet when you run into your friends, they are reacting like you've just only been placed on a punishment of sorts by your parents. So then, they immediately go into a long drawn out discussion about absolutely nothing! And you're standing there, listening and talking. When you are suppose to be getting in and getting out. WTFreak is this! Ridiculous is what it is.4. The drama/suspense... Where was itThe cliff hanger, should not even be considered that. Just another bogus and failed attempt to hook you to get to book 3. I'm not biting. This was the worst 2nd installment to a trilogy that I have ever read. For a trilogy that started out so promising I'm HIGHLY disappointed. So I can't in good faith recommend this read. I will not be moving on to the final book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent BookBy Larena HubbleContemporary, mythology, Young Adult, FloridaPierce knows what it is like to die especially since she has already done it before. She has tried to return to the life that she was living before her accident but she can’t help but feel both a part of this world and yet apart from it. Though she is never alone because someone is always watching her.Pierce has moved to a new town and hopes that things will be different. Though even in this new place he has found her. She knows he isn’t a Guardian angel because his dark world is nowhere near heaven but she can’t stay away from him. He always appears when she needs it most even though she never quite expects it.Pierce is afraid that if she falls for him anymore she will end up in the place she fears the most, the Underworld. This takes the myth of Persephone and completely reimagines it to place it in a contemporary setting and still makes it all its own story. It does a good job of explaining the back story for Pierce while still staying in the present and what she is currently dealing with. It has some great twists and turns and with every answer that is unveiled the more that is understood. The characters are well written and relatable. Reading how Pierce slowly figures out just what is happening to her and what did happen to her takes the reader on a very interesting journey. It will also having readers wanting to read the next book just to see what else will happen in this story and just where Pierce will ultimately end up.See all 480 customer reviews...
